Further reading When instituted in 1975, the National Medal (NM) was intended to replace all existing Imperial long service and good conduct medals, not only for the ADF but for other uniformed services, including police and ambulance as well. The qualifying period for the NM is 15 years service, with clasps awarded for each additional 10 years of service. For the first time, service by regular officers of the ADF could be recognised by a long service award. Previously, only officers of the various reserve elements of the ADF, or those with significant other rank service, were entitled to such awards. The Statutes for the NM have been amended on several occasions, most notably in 1982 when the Defence Force Service Awards (DFSA) were introduced. This meant that, with limited exceptions, the NM was no longer available for members of the ADF. Members of the ADF, both permanent and part time, remain eligible for the NM as a result of service, either full or part-time, with other recognised non-ADF organisations such as volunteer fire services. Design The NM is a circular bronze medal, 38 mm in diameter, ensigned with the Crown of St Edward, containing the Arms of the Commonwealth of Australia within a rim carrying the inscription ‘THE NATIONAL MEDAL : FOR SERVICE’. The reverse is plain with a narrow rim. ADF personnel have their service details engraved on the reverse. Ribbon The NM ribbon is 32 mm wide with 15 alternating gold and blue stripes. These were Australia’s national colours at the time of introduction. Clasps The award of a clasp to the NM is denoted by a bar having along its surface 10 raised hemispheres. When the ribbon is worn alone, the award of a clasp is indicated by a ribbon emblem in the form of a representation of the Medal. As further clasps are awarded, additional ribbon emblems are worn. Order of Wear Is below the Defence Long Service Medal. And above the Australian Defence Medal.
