Description In 2004 the Government announced the establishment of the Australian Defence Medal (ADM). This medal is designed to recognise the service of all members of the ADF, in peace and war, and is awarded to those who completed qualifying service, regular or reserve since 3 September 1945. It is classified as a service medal and distinct from the long service awards. Design The ADM is a circular cupro-nickel medal, 38 mm in diameter. The obverse has the stylised version of Commonwealth Coat of Arms used on the Australia Service Medal 1939–1945 surrounded by the inscription ‘THE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE MEDAL’ above a sprig of wattle that surrounds the bottom edge of the flan. The reverse has the inscription ‘FOR SERVICE’ surmounted by the Crown of St Edward all surrounded by a wattle wreath. The use of the wreath acknowledges the sacrifice of those who have died in service or been discharged due to injury resulting from service, a secondary qualification for the Medal. Ribbon The ADM ribbon is 32 mm wide, red with black edges, the colours of the Flanders poppy used to represent the Anzac spirit of the Australian armed forces. Two narrow white stripes represent contribution to the peace of Australia, and also divide the red field into three sections representing the three services. Order of Wear Is below the National Medal. And above the Australian Cadet Forces Service Medal.
