Royal Air Force Long Service and Good Conduct Medal

Further reading The RAF Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (LS&GCM) was instituted on 1 July 1919 to be awarded to NCOs and other ranks of the RAF for 18 years of exemplary service. From 1944 bars were awarded for further periods of qualifying service. From 1944, periods of service in the Army or Navy up to four years could be counted towards the award. From 1947 officers were able to receive the award provided they had served in the ranks for at least 12 years. Design The RAF LS&GCM is a silver (later silver-plated) medal 36 mm in diameter. The obverse has the effigy of the Sovereign. The reverse has the crown over the RAF eagle encircled by the inscription ‘FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT’. Ribbon The ribbon of the RAF LS&GCM is dark blue and maroon with white edge stripes. Clasps A clasp is awarded for each additional 18-year qualifying period of service. The clasp is silver (plated) having in the centre an eagle with outstretched wings surmounted by a crown. Order of Wear Is below the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
