Further reading In 2001, the Australian Government announced that a medal was to be issued to recognise service by veterans of the two national service schemes that had operated in Australia between 1951 and 1972. Between 1951–1959 more than 227 000 18-year old Australian men were required to undertake a short period of full-time military service followed by part-time service under the national service scheme. From January 1965 through until December 1972, a further 63 000 national servicemen gave either 18 months or two years of full-time service. In addition more than 30 000 Australians elected to complete their national service obligation as members of the Citizen Military Forces under the 1965–1972 national service scheme. This scheme required service by 20-year old males who were selected by a ballot system. Design The ANSM is a bronze medal 38 mm in diameter ensigned with the Crown of Saint Edward. The obverse has a central device being a derivative of the current Australian Defence Force Emblem reflecting, more historically, national service as it related to the defence force from the 1950s to the 1970s, with the crossed swords of the Army taking precedence, being the arm predominantly affected by national service. Surrounding the outer edge are the words ‘ANNIVERSARY OF NATIONAL SERVICE’ and at the central bottom edge the years ‘1951–1972’. The reverse has a central device of concentric lines emanating from a nucleus, over-layered with the stars of the Southern Cross, representing national service being influential in the machinery of the defence force during a time of need and its broad impact in Australia. Surrounding the central device is a cog, the traditional symbol representing the spirit of cooperation between the Australian Defence Force and the Australian community, thus recognising those who accepted the obligation to serve as part of national service. Ribbon The ANSM ribbon has a yellow central stripe flanked by dark blue, white, green and light blue stripes. Two ochre stripes are at each edge of the ribbon. The ribbon colours are drawn from white, green and light blue representing the Navy, Army and Air Force. The central yellow and dark blue stripes represent the Australia’s national colours of the time, and the outer ochre stripes represent the soil of Australia. Order of Wear Is below the Imperial efficiency and long service awards.. And above the Independence and Anniversary Medals.
