Further reading With the Olympic Games to be staged in Australia in 2000, the Australian Government announced that it would establish a commemorative medal to be awarded in the Olympic year to selected Australians to recognise achievement in all aspects of sport. Nominations were called for in 2000 and some 18 000 medals were awarded. The medal was only awarded at that time and is not available as an ongoing award for sporting achievement. Design The Australian Sports Medal is a circular nickel-silver medal 38 mm in diameter. The obverse has a stylised view of the Sydney Olympic Stadium with the Southern Cross constellation above. The reverse has the Olympic Stadium and the inscription ‘TO COMMEMORATE AUSTRALIAN SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT’ and the date ‘2000’. Ribbon The Australian Sports Medal ribbon is 32 mm wide, sand-coloured with four narrow green stripes of varying width placed toward the right side of the ribbon. Order of Wear Is below the 80th Anniversary Armistice Remembrance Medal. And above the Centenary of Federation Medal.
