The OSM was established following acceptance of a recommendation of the 2008 Review of Defence Honours, Awards and Commendationsby the Government. The OSM will replace the existing AASM and ASM for operations declared after the date of establishment of the OSM. Personnel on existing operations recognised by the AASM or ASM will continue to be awarded those medals with relevant clasps. The OSM (Civilian) will provide recognition for those civilians who are employed on Defence operations, under the provisions of the Defence Force Discipline Act 1982. Civilians will be recognised for service since the end of the INTERFET operation in April 2000 when it had been decided that civilians would not be entitled to be recognised with military awards (AASM and ASM). The OSM (Civilian) will have the same medal, but with a single ribbon design and clasps awarded for each operation on which civilians are employed. Design The OSM is a cupro-nickel medal 38 mm in diameter, finished in antique silver. The obverse bears an old-world stylised world globe signifying global operations, interlinked with a Federation Star. The globe is surrounded by the words ‘AUSTRALIAN OPERATIONAL SERVICE MEDAL’. The reverse bears a central horizontal stylised scroll with the words ‘Defending Australia and its national interests’, overlaying a wreath of mimosa, above which sits an hour glass motif signifying the ongoing vigilance and timely response of Defence. Ribbon The ribbon for the OSM (Civilian) is green with central stripes of gold and purple. The purple represents Defence and green and gold are Australia’s national colours. Clasps Clasps finished in antique silver are issued with the civilian variant for each operation.
