Further reading Prior to 1975, adult officers and senior instructors of cadets in the various arms of the Australian cadet movement had been entitled to their own Imperial long service medal. The Cadet Forces Medal was established in 1950 and was awarded for 12 years service with the Naval Reserve Sea Cadets, the Australian Army Cadet Corps or the Air Training Corps. At the time the Imperial system was discontinued in Australia in 1975, the Government also withdrew support for the cadet movement. Notwithstanding this, the cadet movement survived, mainly in the private school system, and was eventually revived under the sponsorship of the ADF. It was not until 1999, however, that a new medal was instituted to replace the Cadet Forces Medal. While the medal is not strictly a Defence long service award and is not available to ADF members, it is logical to locate the medal with the long service awards given that the Australian Defence Cadets are actively sponsored by the ADF. The Australian Cadet Forces Service Medal (ACFSM) was established by Letters Patent of 15 December 1999 and notified in CAG No S129 of 17 March 2000. The Medal is awarded to adult officers and instructors of cadets for 15 years service. Clasps are awarded for additional five-year periods of service. Design The ACFSM is a circular cupro-nickel medal, 38 mm in diameter, ensigned with the Crown of St Edward, having the emblem of the Australian Cadet Force surrounded by the inscription ‘AUSTRALIAN CADET FORCES SERVICE MEDAL’. The reverse has the Federation Star overlayed by a bar engraved with the recipient’s details. Ribbon The ACFSM ribbon is 32 mm wide with central stripes of blue and gold and three outer stripes of navy, red and light-blue. The ribbon design mirrors that of the DLSM and this is flanked by the tri-Service colours. Clasps The award of a clasp to the ACFSM is denoted by a cupro-nickel bar surmounted by the Royal Cypher flanked by sprigs of wattle. When the ribbon is worn alone, the award of a clasp is indicated by the addition of a circular cupro-nickel rosette or a cupro nickel Federation Star. A total of four emblems can be worn on the ribbon. The first four clasps to the Medal are indicated by rosettes. The fifth clasp is indicated by a single cupro nickel Federation Star and subsequent clasps are indicated by additional Federation Stars. Order of Wear Is below the Australian Defence Medal. And above the Champion Shots Medal. Further information can be found at Defence Honours and Awards PMC Honours and Symbols Information sourced from the DHAM. |
