Further reading The Vietnam Medal was instituted on 8 June 1968 by Her Majesty’s Command and awarded for service in Vietnam between 29 May 1964 and 27 January 1973. Service before this date was recognised by the General Service Medal 1962 with clasp ‘SOUTH VIETNAM’ The Vietnam Medal was issued under the Imperial system but was mainly awarded to Australian and New Zealand personnel. Design The Vietnam Medal is a cupro-nickel medal, 36 mm in diameter with an ornamental suspender bar. The obverse has the effigy of the Queen surrounded by the words ‘ELIZABETH II DEI GRATA REGINA F.D.’. The reverse has the words ‘VIETNAM’ at the top centre appearing above the symbolic representations of the ideological war in Vietnam depicting the figure of a man in the centre of the medal, standing between spherical shapes. Ribbon The Vietnam Medal ribbon has a wide central stripe stylised to represent the Republic of Vietnam (RVN) flag (three central pin-stripes of red on a yellow background). Flanking this are stripes of red, dark blue and light blue representing service in the RVN by the Australian Army, Navy and Air Force. Oak Leaf Personnel mentioned in despatches wear the appropriate oak-leaf ribbon emblem on the Vietnam Medal ribbon, miniature medal ribbon and on the ribbon bar when the ribbon is worn alone. Order of Wear Is below the General Service Medal 1962. And above the Vietnam Logistic and Support Medal.
