Further reading The United Nations Medal is an international decoration awarded by the United Nations (UN) to various international members for participation in joint international military and police operations such as peacekeeping, humanitarian efforts and disaster relief. Design The United Nations Medal is a circular medal of bronze alloy, 36 mm in diameter. The obverse depicts the straight letters UN above the ‘World-in-a-Wreath’ emblem and the reverse has the inscription: ‘IN THE SERVICE OF PEACE’. The qualifying period for the UN Medal is now generally standardised as 90 consecutive days. Ribbon Although the medal design remains the same for each award, the ribbon design varies for each United Nations operation. Medal ribbon emblems The UN has a system of numerals that are worn on the UN Medal ribbon and ribbon bar to signify additional service on UN missions. The numeral ‘2’ is awarded on completion of 180 continuous days service after the initial 90 days qualifying service. Further periods of 180 days continuous service are recognised by the numerals ‘3’, ‘4’ etc. Order of Wear Foreign Awards in order of date of authorisation of their acceptance and wearing.
