Further reading The Queen’s South Africa Medal was awarded for service in the Boer War in South Africa. The Australian colonies raised units and a number of Australians who were not able to join Australian units enlisted in British and South African units. Design The Queen’s South Africa Medal is a silver and bronze medal 36 mm in diameter. The obverse has the crowned and veiled head of Queen Victoria and the legend ‘VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX’. The reverse depicts Britannia with a flag in her left hand holding out a laurel wreath to a party of advancing soldiers. In the background are two warships. Below the wreath in two lines, appear the dates ‘1899–1900’ in relief. Around the top are the words ‘SOUTH AFRICA’. There are three distinct types of reverse. Type 1 has the dates ‘1899–1900’, type 1a has the dates removed and type 2 has no dates and the extended arm in a slightly higher position. Ribbon The Queen’s South Africa Medal ribbon is 32 mm wide, with a broad orange central stripe flanked by two dark blue stripes and red edges. Clasps
