Further reading In addition to the military awards created in 1991, a medal to recognise overseas service by members of Australian police services was established by Letters Patent of that year. Australian civil police officers have served with the United Nations (UN) Force in Cyprus since 1964. While Australian police officers who served on Cyprus were entitled to the UN medal for that mission, it was felt that an Australian award, along the lines of the Australian Service Medal, was also warranted. The Police Overseas Service Medal (POSM) is awarded to Australian police officers who serve in approved operations, with a clasp being awarded for each operation. To date, clasps have been approved for Cyprus, Cambodia, Somalia, Mozambique, Bougainville, East Timor, Haiti and Solomon Islands. Design The POSM is a circular nickel-silver medal 38 mm in diameter, ensigned with the Crown of St Edward. The obverse has a globe of the world surmounted by a branch of wattle, representative of Australia. The globe and wattle are surrounded around the rim of the medal by the chequerboard pattern representative of police forces worldwide. The reverse has a central horizontal panel 27 mm across and 8 mm high superimposed on a Federation Star, enclosed by the inscription ‘POLICE OVERSEAS SERVICE MEDAL’. Ribbon The POSM ribbon is 32 mm wide, with alternating squares of black and white in the chequerboard pattern representative of police service. Clasps The POSM is presented with a nickel-silver clasp that shows the name of the theatre for which the medal is awarded. Order of Wear Is below the Rhodesia Medal. And above the Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal. Further information can be found at Governor General Office PMC Honours and Symbols AFP Information sourced from the DHAM. |
