Further reading The Naval General Service Medal (NGSM) 1915–1962 was instituted on 6 August 1915 for service in minor Naval war-like operations. As is the case with other ‘general service’ medals the NGSM 1915–1962 is always issued with a clasp denoting the area of operations. Subsequent service is recognised by the award of further clasps to be worn on the original medal. Although the medal was introduced in 1915 it was not generally awarded to Australians until after World War II, and most commonly for the Malayan Emergency. Design The NGSM 1915–1962 is a cupro-nickel medal, 36 mm in diameter with a straight bar suspender. The obverse has the effigy of the reigning sovereign at time of issue. The reverse shows an image of ‘Britannia’ in a chariot pulled by two sea-horses. Ribbon The NGSM 1915–1962 ribbon has a wide white central stripe, with two red pin-stripes, and edged with red stripes. Clasps and Oak Leaf Members mentioned in despatches for operations recognised by the NGSM 1915–1962 after 11 August 1920 were approved to wear a bronze oak leaf on the medal ribbon and a small version as a ribbon bar emblem.
Order of Wear Is below the Victory Medal. And above the General Service Medal 1918-62. The order of wearing of the Naval General Service Medal 1915-62 and General Service Medal 1918-62 (Army and Air Force) will vary from person to person depending on when the person earned the first clasp. If the first clasp relates to service between World War I and World War II, the medals should be worn immediately after World War I war medals. If the first clasp relates to service after 2 September 1945, the medals should be worn immediately after the United Nations Service Medal for Korea.
