Description The National Emergency Medal (NEM) is an operational service medal which recognises significant or sustained service to others in a nationally significant emergency. It was announced by the Prime Minister on 26 January 2011 following disasters in Queensland involving flooding in Southern Queensland and Cyclone Yasi in North Queensland. The regulations also provide for retrospective recognition of service during the 2009 Victorian bushfires. Design The obverse of the NEM has a stylised representation of Australia’s national floral emblem, the wattle, as the central symbol. Around the central image is flowering wattle, representing the accomplishments and sacrifices made by Australians in the service of others in times of crisis. The reverse of the medal repeats the ring of flowering wattle, and details the award and recipient. Ribbon The NEM ribbon colours match the colours of the Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal ribbon of gold and eucalyptus green. Gold symbolises the Australian sun, optimism and hope. Eucalyptus green complements the symbolism of the medal design. The seven gold coloured bands represent Australia’s six states, with the seventh representing the territories. Clasps
