Further reading In 1999, Australia led the international force that saw the removal of the occupying Indonesian power from the former Portuguese territory of East Timor. To recognise the importance of this operation, both as being one of the biggest Australian military operations since the World War II and the first Australian initiated and led international military operation, the INTERFET Medal was established by Letters Patent of 25 March 2000 published in CAG S159 dated 30 March 2000. As well as being awarded to members of the ADF, the INTERFET Medal has been offered by Australia to all countries that provided contingents to the International Force in East Timor, and a number have accepted. Design The INTERFET Medal is a cast metal medal, 38 mm in diameter, with a textured surface with a raised and polished outer edge, ensigned with the Federation Star. The obverse has a central design of an outline map of East Timor and its territories, contour raised and textured, overlayered with an outline figure of the dove of peace with olive branch, surrounded by the words ‘INTERNATIONAL FORCE EAST TIMOR’, with one spray of olive leaves at the bottom central edge, all raised and polished. The reverse has a central circular panel surrounded by the words ‘TOGETHER AS ONE FOR PEACE IN EAST TIMOR’, both raised and polished. Ribbon The INTERFET Medal ribbon has a central red stripe, flanked by two green stripes, which are in turn flanked by two white stripes, further flanked with two outer blue stripes. The ribbon colours are drawn from white, green and blue representing the Navy, Army and Air Force, but having dual representations of white for peace, blue for the sea surrounding East Timor and green for the regrowth of a new nation. The central red stripe represents the turbulent past of East Timor. Order of Wear Is below the Australian Active Service Medal. And above the Afghanistan Medal.
