Further reading By 1999, the ADF and Australian police services had a system of medals to recognise overseas service, but there was no medal available to recognise service by the increasing number of private citizens who were giving valuable humanitarian service overseas with various Non Government Organisations. To meet this requirement, the Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal (HOSM) was introduced following the Review of Australian Honours and Awards, which reported in late 1995. Design The HOSM is a circular nickel-silver medal 38 mm in diameter. The obverse has a stylised eucalyptus tree surrounded by a ring of gum nuts. The reverse has a ring of gum nuts surrounding the inscription ‘FOR OVERSEAS HUMANITARIAN SERVICE’. Ribbon The HOSM ribbon is 32 mm wide, green with a central gold stripe. Clasps
