Further reading The Defence Medal was instituted to provide recognition for specified periods of service in non-operational areas subjected to air attack or closely threatened. Design The Defence Medal is a cupro-nickel medal, 36 mm in diameter, with a straight bar suspender. The obverse has the uncrowned effigy of King George VI surrounded by the words ‘GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR.OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP’. The reverse has a conventional oak tree centrally, with a crown above, with two lions counter rampart as supporters between the dates ‘1939’ and ‘1945’. The base of the medal bears the words ‘THE DEFENCE MEDAL’ arranged horizontally. Ribbon The Defence Medal ribbon has an orange central stripe, flanked by green outer stripes equally divided by a black pin-stripe running down the centre of each. The green represents the Islands of the UK, the orange enemy attacks, and the black the black outs. Order of Wear Is below the France and Germany Star. And above the War Medal 1939-45.
