Further reading To qualify for a Defence Force Service Medal, a member is required to complete 15 years of efficient remunerated service prior to 20 April 1999 and must have been serving on or after 14 February 1975. A minimum of 12 years in the Regular Forces and up to 3 years in the Reserve (to total 15 years) can be counted towards the medal only. Clasps are awarded for each further periods of 5 years efficient regular service. Reserve service and Continuous Full Time service in the Reserve does not qualify towards clasps for this medal. From 20 April 1999 the Defence Force Service Medal was replaced by the Defence Long Service Medal. Qualifying service for clasps can be accrued after 19 April 1999. Design The DFSM is a cupro-nickel circular chamfered medal, 38 mm in diameter, ensigned with the Crown of St Edward, surmounted by the Joint Service Emblem on the obverse. The reverse is inscribed ‘FOR EFFICIENT SERVICE IN THE PERMANENT FORCES’ around the circumference. Ribbon The DFSM ribbon is 32 mm wide with three equal bands of gold and azure blue and edged with narrow bands of azure-blue. These were Australia’s national colours at the time of introduction. Clasps The award of a clasp to the DFSM is denoted by a cupro-nickel bar surmounted by the Royal Cypher flanked by sprigs of wattle. When the ribbon is worn alone, the award of a clasp is indicated by a ribbon emblem in the form of a circular cupro-nickel rosette or a cupro-nickel Federation Star. A total of four emblems can be worn on the ribbon. The first four clasps to the Medal are indicated by rosettes. The fifth clasp is indicated by a single cupro-nickel Federation Star and subsequent clasps are indicated by additional Federation Stars. Order of Wear Is below the Centenary Medal.
