Australian Service Medal

Further reading The Australian Service Medal was approved in 1988, and may be awarded for service in, or in connection with a prescribed non-warlike operation. Design The ASM is a circular nickel-silver medal 38 mm in diameter, ensigned with the Crown of St Edward. The obverse has a modified Shield of the Commonwealth Coat of Arms surmounted by the Defence Force Joint Service Emblem superimposed on a background of the meridians of longitude. The reverse has clusters of mimosa blossoms surrounding a Federation Star bearing the inscription ‘FOR SERVICE’. Ribbon The ASM ribbon is 32 mm wide. The ribbon colours are primarily variations of the Australian colours of green and gold in tones that reflect the Australian landscape. The ribbon has a central brown symbolising the earth of Australia that is flanked by stripes of dark green, light green, gold and silver-green. Clasps Each medal is presented with a nickel-silver clasp bearing the name of the theatre or action for which the award is made that is attached to the ribbon. A miniature clasp is worn with the miniature medal. A further award or awards of the ASM in another area or areas is recognised by the presentation of an additional clasp or clasps. The additional clasp or clasps are attached to the ribbon of the Medal above the original clasp in order of date of receipt. Clasp sets include both the full-size and miniature clasps.
