The Afghanistan Medal and the Iraq Medal were created in 2004 to recognise service in operations to liberate Afghanistan and Iraq. These medals are issued in addition to the Australian Active Service Medal with appropriate clasp. Design The Afghanistan Medal is a cupro-nickel circular medal, 38 mm in diameter. The obverse has a central design of the Commonwealth Coat of Arms within a beaded border. The reverse design of the Afghanistan Medal is based on a portion of a snow-capped mountain range with a multi-rayed sun rising behind the mountains. The mountains represent the dominant terrain of the country and the rising sun represents a ‘new dawn’ for the nation. The word ‘Afghanistan’ appears around the central device in English and in the Arabic script. Ribbon The Afghanistan Medal ribbon is khaki representing the dominant ground colour of the terrain, edged with light blue and white stripes representing the sky above the mountains and the snow on the mountain peaks with central stripes of purple and red representing the ADF and the conflict in Afghanistan. Order of Wear Is below the International Force East Timor Medal. And above the Iraq Medal.
